VDP Mosel Auction 2014 | An event with Two Major Surprises

The VDP Mosel Auction 2014 held last week was a contrast of high prices and bargains.

As usual, the event of the auction held by the Grosser Ring / VDP Mosel was a gathering of the who is who of the Riesling world and a “must-be-there” event ... if only to see Maximilian von Kunow, owner of the von Hövel Estate, aptly taking on the role of auctioneer (as one can see from the picture!)

The auction delivered two major surprises:

• The 2013er Kabinett by Weingut Egon Müller was hammered off at a staggering €113. To the best of our knowledge, this makes it the most expensive Kabinett ever. This gorgeous wine was offered in smaller quantities than last year (the Estate had terrifyingly small yields, more on this in our October issue) and this must have played a role in the price formation as well.

• The Weingut Peter Lauer wines proved complete bargains. The Kabinett and the Spätlese hammered off for less than €25 and the perfect TBA, one of the best young TBAs we have ever tasted, for “only” €215. While we feel with Florian Lauer as his wines are “worth more”, those smart enough to bid on bottles from this maybe “lesser known” name now have some stunning wines for comparatively little money in their cellar!

Most other wines were auctioned off at price levels slightly above with past vintages, no doubt due to the scarcity of the offer. The detailed list of results can be found in Mosel Fine Wines Issue No 26 (Oct 2014).
